As you may have guessed, the name ‘emerald’ is based off the cuts used on emeralds. One day, someone decided to use that same cut on diamonds and voila, we have emerald cut diamonds that are perfect engagement rings and fine jewellery.  

This emerald gemstone style cut was highly popular in the 1920s and 1940s. But eventually, the cut started to make its way to diamonds and other gemstones.  

A true emerald cut diamond has several rows of stepped facets on its crown and pavilion and they run parallel until they reach the girdle of the diamond. Like most diamond shapes, the emerald has 57 or 58 facets. The facets form a concentric alignment which creates the sparkling “hall of mirrors” effect, which the emerald cut is most prized for.  

Emerald vs. Radiant vs. Asscher Diamonds 

There are two similar diamonds cuts that are commonly confused with the Emerald Cut.  

Radiant cut diamonds  

Compared to the rectangular emerald, radiant cut offers a similar silhouette. They both have the rectangular cropped corners. But that’s where the similarities end. If you will notice in the image below, a radiant cut diamond is more scintillating because it has smaller facets.  

Emerald diamonds are characterized by larger facts resulting in less scintillation but offer more depth. Think of a radiant cut diamond as a droplet of water and think of an emerald cut like the clear surface of the lake.  

Asscher cut diamonds  

Asscher cut is different from Emerald cut diamonds up close. The former comes in a square shape with cropped corners and has a distinctive X pattern seen on the top facet.
