It is too fair to say pink diamonds are a worthy and worthwhile investment and will be for many years to come. Pink diamonds originate from Australia. In fact, 90% of the world’s natural pink diamonds are produced in Australia. Pink diamonds are among the most desired coloured diamonds due to their rarity, femininity, beauty, and unique, romantic colours. pink diamonds are among the rarest coloured gemstones, alongside red, blue and violet.

What makes a pink diamond?

Not all pink diamonds, colours and hues are seen as equal. Just like many fancy-coloured diamonds, pink diamonds come in many different shades.

There are three pink diamond attributes that determine its colour grade, including its hue, saturation, and tone. A pink hue should be the diamond’s dominant colour, although some factors, such as its tint, may cause it to vary. The pink diamond saturation determines the strength of the pink colour of the pink diamond.

The saturation and shades range from faint, very light, light, fancy light, fancy intense, fancy deep and fancy vivid.

The pink diamond tone ranges from light to dark and establishes the lightness, darkness and value of the pink diamond. The more intense the pink diamond colour, the higher the cost. For example, a rich, pure pink-coloured natural diamond, graded as a Fancy Vivid Pink, will be exponentially costlier than a Fancy Pink or Fancy Light Pink Diamond.

What are Pink Diamonds Called?

Pink diamonds are named using a pattern developed by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). The pink diamond’s carat is determined and stated, and then the stone’s hue (dominant colour) is tested to see if pink is the dominant colour. The pink diamond carat weight determines whether a pink diamond is called a ‘fancy vivid’, which means it has achieved the highest value, intensive natural fancy colour diamond grade.

Even with a hue of another colour, it is still named a pink diamond. A pink diamond can also sometimes display a purplish tint. Although, a pink diamond with a purple tint is valued the same as a pink-only hue.

You’ll never find the same pink diamond twice. Pink diamonds often come in a wide array of secondary colour hues, not just pink, including an orange hue.

Although pink diamonds are more valuable if another colour or overtone is not present. Some countries typically tend to produce pink diamonds with another colour present. For example, pink diamonds mined in South Africa and Brazil often present a brownish hue.

How are Pink Diamonds Formed?

Natural pink diamonds are formed over millions, sometimes billions, of years from a carbon element. They are heated at around 2,2000 degrees Fahrenheit over 100 miles within the Earth’s core. They remain within the Earth’s core over millions of years, cooling into solid form rocks.

Most pink diamonds are formed differently than others and are sourced from a volcanic lamproite pipe, differing from the usual kimberlite pipe.

Pink diamonds are created under unimaginable conditions, with carbon elements forming and growing within the stones into rough diamond rocks under immense heat and pressure, building and enduring under the earth over time.

What Causes the Pink Diamond Color?

Pink diamonds have a compressed internal structure. The origin of the pink colour is believed to be due to the immense pressure buildup, although this has never been proven. It is also thought that the compression of the grains is significant, as only pink light shines through and penetrates the diamond.

Pink diamonds are believed to be unusual because other fancy-coloured diamonds’ colour origins are due to impurities. For example, the canary diamond is caused by nitrogen buildup. However, a pink diamond’s colour is thought to be formed due to the diamond’s crystal lattice.

One theory behind pink diamonds’ colour is structural deformation called ‘plastic deformation’, which causes the structure of the diamond to deform or alter when it is forced to the Earth’s surface. Therefore the ‘plastic deformation’ would cause the pink diamond to absorb light differently, causing it to emit a pink hue.

Are Pink Diamonds Natural?

Yes, pink diamonds are 100% natural. A pink diamond is mined and then cut. The rough stone, before cutting, has a natural pinkish tint.

Are pink diamonds rare?

Pink diamonds are considered exceedingly rare and belong to the Type II category of diamonds. A very small percentage of diamonds worldwide are IIa or type IIb. A diamond in this category is considered very valuable and rare. Most diamonds, including many coloured diamonds, belong to the Type I category of diamonds.

Most fancy-coloured natural diamonds and gemstones are considered rare as they a mined less frequently than colourless diamonds, with only 0.01 of coloured diamonds mined yearly compared to their colourless counterparts.

Pink diamonds are only found in certain parts of the world, adding to their rarity. One of the world’s most famous pink diamond producers and largest miners, The Australian Argyle mine, averages around 8,000,000 carats annually, with only 1% of these carats carrying a pink grade. In fact, 80% of the diamonds mined at the Argyle mine are brown diamonds, and of every 1 million carats mined, only 1 carat of pink diamonds is graded suitable for resale. An average of 40 – 50 carats are sold annually at auction.

Where are Pink Diamonds mined?

Pink diamonds are mined and sourced in:

  • Australia
  • India- in the Golconda mine, producers of many Types I and Type II a/b diamonds
  • Brazil
  • Russia
  • Diavik in Canada
  • South Africa

Argyle Pink Diamonds

Argyle pink diamonds have skyrocketed to success, although it is thought they are not necessarily of a higher quality. This could derive from a successful marketing strategy and branding concentrating on where they are mined, much like Champagne.

Why are Pink Diamonds so Expensive?

Pink diamonds are so expensive as they are rare, in demand and beautiful. The origin and story behind the pink diamond also drive up the price. For example, some Argyle Pink Diamonds are mined in Argyle in Western Australia, which produces some of the most striking, rare, and extraordinary diamonds on the market.

Are pink diamonds more expensive?

Pink diamonds are often more expensive than many of their colorful friends, including yellow diamonds.

Pink diamonds are more expensive than white diamonds and can cost up to 20 times more when comparing an equivalent white diamond of the same carat, clarity and cut. Another factor that may add to a pink diamond’s cost is that it is difficult to polish due to its complicated structure and can take 3 – 4 times longer than a white diamond.

Are Pink Diamonds worth more than colourless diamonds?

Pink diamonds are worth more than colourless diamonds, although their characteristics always determine their true value.

How much does a Pink Argyle Diamond Cost?

According to the Argyle Mine, a 1-carat pink diamond can cost anything from $100,000 to $1,000,000. A Pink Argyle Diamond’s cost depends on the cut, clarity, shape and the colour intensity or presence of a secondary hue.

Are pink diamonds a good investment?

One of the basic principles behind a good investment is supply and demand. As natural pink diamonds are rare and difficult to source, their price value makes them excellent investment opportunities.

Pink diamonds have become a popular choice for investment in recent years and are an excellent, unique purchase than the usual gold, silver, colourless diamond or jewellery investment.

There are crucial factors to consider to ensure a maximum return on investment. We recommend you do your research, including using this handy guide when considering pink diamonds as an investment; much like any purchase, there are pros and cons.

Due to their rarity, popularity and, in return, their demand, pink diamonds remain a popular choice, although due to low mining supplies remain low. The value of some pink diamonds has skyrocketed recently, making them a sound and sought-after investment piece.

A pink diamond does not have a shelf life or lose its sparkle or colour, with most remaining as striking, bright and stunning as the day they were originally mined.

A factor that contributes to the value of an argyle diamond is its certification. Many Argyle diamonds without certificates have stagnated in value. In fact, according to the FCRF, uncertified pink diamonds have only increased by a mere 1% in value in the last five years. Comparatively, Australian-certified pink diamonds have grown at an astonishing rate, with an average of 18.6% to 28% value growth within 12 months.
